At a recent meeting of the Hudson Valley Fly Fishers, I was lucky enough to win a copy of The Caddisfly Handbook by Dick Pobst and Carl Richards. I actually had an earlier copy of the book where I had bookmarked a photo of a spent caddis. I usually don't fish a spent caddis pattern because they usually happen late at night or very early in the morning and work always seems to get in the way of fishing. After some additional reading, I found that several authors noted having had good luck with them during a standard caddis hatch. There are some famous spent wing caddis patterns like Larry Solomon’s Delta Wing or the Carl Richards/Bob Braendie Quad Wing. But no Wally Wings!!! So here's my next Wally Wing project. It’s called the Double Wally Spent Caddis.
I experimented with a razor foam body and a peccary body. I also tried putting the wings on facing forward and reversed. It’s a challenge to mount double Wally Wings at the same tie in point, and splitting them one at a time to get a better silhouette. Seems like it may be worth the effort.
For those of you needing a Wally Wing refresher course, click here.
